Welcome to our journey!

What has happened in this yard?

This lawn has been changed from a monocultures area that supports no biodiversity, to a native pollinator garden supporting birds, butterflies and other wee beasties, both above and below the soil.

2025 was year 2 for the most of the native plants. When you plant, usually year 1 they ‘sleep‘, while they are setting down a strong root system. Year 2, they ‘creep‘, while they are growing in their environment. Then year 3, they LEAP!

Year 2 (the creep year) seemed to have a very high growth and it is all a work in progress. There is Canada Goldenrod growing that actually became very tall. This plant, although being a keystone plant, can be quite enthusiastic (meaning it can take over) In 2026, we will be removing this plant and planting a different type of more well behaved goldenrod.

In case you did not know!

Did you know this subdivision was built on a wetland, so it is critical to bring that biodiversity back……..one garden at a time.

  • * Have you read about the declining bird populations?
  • * Been worried about the floods and crazy weather?
  • * Did you know that it takes ~6000 – 9000 caterpillars to raise a chickadee family?
  • * Are you aware that our native insects are plant specialists and only eat native plants?
  • * Native plants host these insects, which in turn feed a variation of birds. Without the insects, there will be no birds.
  • * Native plants will increase the biodiversity in your garden exponentially!
